Rain started while i was talking to the class about significant figures( a topic very significant in measurement). The atmosphere of the class amazingly changed as rain started its thunderous pour outside. The class room went dark and i switched all lights on. Children were getting excited.Few were looking outside to see the effect of the sudden change. Even i was passively aware about the presence of it.The sound of rain falling on the roof of the class room was making it difficult for me to be audible to all in the class . Those who were sitting at the back row were not hearing anything at all.My voice totally failed to compete withe the dancing rain.Wind blew violently. It carried water to the class through the open grill. The calmness of the class room lost and children started murmuring to each other which slowly turned to group discussion.I watched the other classes. It was the same situation there too.
This was a grave situation! How will i control them? An idea struck me. Without telling them anything i started to draw a picture on the board. It was something i used in lower grade to entertain children..
It was a picture that will look like the face of a bear or dog. While i progress the drawing i will keep on asking them what it look like. They all will say bear or dog. But at last with a magic stroke i will complete the picture and the face of a monkey will appear instead of the bear.
This used to work very well with young minds. Today i was not sure about the outcome. But something is always better than doing nothing.
The children were still talking above the sound of rain. There was one problem. The rain is still continuing its drum-dance over the roof. I cannot ask them what it is .So i wrote on one side."what?". Like a magic spell the class went silent for a moment. The next moment the class shouted."BEAR!!". I knew that it worked. I turned to them and gestured silent with my index finger on my lips. The class went dead. I added few more lines. I dramatically touched the What question. They shouted " BEAR!!
